Why is too much sugar unhealthy?

Common household sugar - sucrose - is a carbohydrate found in plants and fruitsnaturally occurring carbohydrate and a mixture ofGlucose and fructose(50/50), which is usually obtained from sugar cane. While glucose can be metabolized by almost every cell in our body, fructose is only broken down by the liver. Scientific studies have shown that a high consumption of fructose (caused by artificial added sugar) can lead to insulin resistance, fatty liver or type 2 diabetes. There are now many articles and books that show the negative health consequences of high sugar consumption.

It all depends on the type of sugar

The psychological Dependence on sugar is considerable. It is therefore essential for a healthy diet to avoid (or reduce) foods that contain granulated sugar. Interesting fact: Agave syrup consists of 70-90% fructose and 10-30% glucose. Considering the high consumption of fructose, it could be considered as harmful as sucrose.

Is the naturally occurring fructose in fruit an exception?

Definitely yes, because fresh fruit contains not only natural fructose additional fiber and does not cause blood sugar levels to spike quickly. The fiber coats the nutrients and so the body takes longer to process them. The result is that we feel fuller for longer and have a slowly increasing energy level feel. Incidentally, it is of course best to consume fruit as fresh as possible. Juices and smoothies, for example, lose their nutrients more quickly (oxidation) due to their large surface area, so it is better to prepare juices and smoothies yourself and drink them straight afterwards. Alsodried fruit contain a considerable amount offiber, are free of fat and can be a wonderful addition to a healthy diet. You don't have to worry about the number of calories, as this is in favour of fibre and is ideally metabolized by the body.
